Sorry for the lack of updates.
The semester is winding down and I'm swamped with...you guessed it...finals.
Such is the life of sleepless nights and cramming as much as possible in as little time.

Running...sometimes you need a buddy...or 20
I never ever thought I would do this, but it is official as of this morning...
I am a member of the local running club.
Instead of desperately looking for a running partner I now have access to 20 some people who love running as much as a nerd loves for Star Wars (Personally I'm a Trekkie, but that is another story for another time). It's intimidating, most of the members are in their forties and fifties and run marathons like it's a cake walk. Talk about motivation!
There's actually a running version of this, with a runner in place of a stick figuresque man running from the dinosaur. Alas, I can't find it. If someone does let me know, please!
Personally, I think about zombies chasing me when I run.

Workout of the...Month
A friend suggested I do a “Workout of the Month”. Ideally I would love to do a "Workout of the Week", but at the rate school is crushing me, "Workout of the Month" seems more realistic. Besides, if I do post more than one “Work out of the Month” in a calendar month, it’s a bonus! And who doesn’t like bonuses?
I did this workout yesterday and my glutes, quads, back, and shoulders are aching today. In a good way.
All links are YouTube videos.
******************************************
Warm up – 1 mile run
2 sets of lunges (15 reps)
2 sets of squats (15 reps)
2 minute run in place (emphasize on bringing knees high up)
2 sets of flutter kicks to failure
2 sets of push-ups to failure
2 minute steam engines
2 sets of Plank (hold as long as possible)
2 sets of crunches (as many as you can in one sitting)
Jump rope 2 minute
Cool down – Fast walk/jog five minutes.
********************************************
For the sets: do one set of one exercise, then do one set of the other, and then back to start with the first exericse. Example: one set of lunges, one set of squats, one set of lunges, one set of squats...
I added 15lb dumbbells to the squats and lunges and 15lb medicine ball to the the crunches. Start out with what's comfortable for you and progress from there. There are of course variations to planks, push-ups, squats etc. Mix it up, change it around, and don't forget to stretch before and after!

Inspiration
A Chilean miner's inspiring NYC marathon
Let’s see. You just spent 69 days buried under a collapsed mine, so, to unwind, what do you do?
Well, if you’re Edison Pena, you run the 42-kilometre New York City Marathon.
Or in Edison’s case, you hobble along on knees swollen with tendonitis, crossing the finish line in five hours and 40 minutes, waving the Chilean flag and limping to one of your favourite Elvis tunes, Wonder Of You.
But I guess if you’ve spent 69 days buried alive, five hours and 40 minutes in hell doesn’t seem so bad. At least they have snacks along the way.

Run time
Had to share, I shaved 14 seconds off my run time since last Saturday!
Running at an even 8 minute for a mile and hanging around 27 (albeit a seconds more) for three miles.
mmmmmMMMMMM!

Jane is alive!
School has been insane. Five classes, plus training, plus life in general.
I still hate running. But I have gotten better. Got my mile down to a comfy 8:20ish.
I enjoy interval sprints more than straight running.
My back muscles are insane (stretched out last winter's cardigan).
My ass is smaller.
Shoulders and arms are looking good.
And I'm still 5'2. Shoot.
Working on a few posts for all of you including pretty pictures/graphics to give this blog more oompf.

Some motivation
Lately I've been down on myself. Physically and mentally. Sometimes days drag and I wonder if I'll ever get to where I need to be fitness wise. Time seems to move slow yet oddly fast in the same breath.
But this article, Charleroi woman stands tall in service to Marines, put the spring back into my step.
"The hardest part was being awakened at 3:35 in the morning by a drill instructor screaming at you. I never regretted one moment of being there. I learned so much about myself and about life -- how you have to be ready for anything and reach down into your heart and soul to make the most of any situation.
You learn to think on your feet, to make decisions that can save your life and, more importantly, the lives of your fellow Marines."
I marvel at her run time and admittedly, I'm happy that I'm not too far behind her FAH and her sit ups.
Martorella posted the highest score among all recruits in her class -- men and women included -- in the physical fitness competition. She ran three miles in 19 minutes, 50 seconds, well below the required 21 minutes to complete the course; had the best hang time (85 seconds) in an endurance test, and recorded 132 sit-ups in two minutes, well over the mandated 100.
You are damn right I'm pushing for a 19:40 three mile run time now.

Gettiing stale
Working out twice a day is great. It means I get to move more, eat more, and sweat more.
It unfortunately leads to boredom rather quickly. On day three of this trial run, I've already started to wonder what more I could do and more importantly, what poor soul could I drag to hell with me. As my fitness level increases the more challenge my body and mind demands. I want something fast. I want something heavy. I want a workout that's going to render me to tears, puking, and sniveling on the ground like a little boy. I need that challenge. I crave it. Unfortunately, I don't know people who are as crazy as I am, at least locally.
Getting out and being creative I feel is the only way to reach my goal. And I'm not far off.
If you have any ideas please email me at janewarrior2010@gmail.com

2xDay, 6xWeek
Trying something new: cardio twice a day, six times a week. So far so good! The only downside, so to speak, is that I have to eat a little bit more to accommodate the higher activity level. It's hard for me to eat as it is, so it's a challenge to find time to prepare meals and carry them around. If I want to get in shape, then I have no excuses. Lets see how it goes over the next week!

PT! Good for you! Good for me!
Future Marines get a taste of bootcamp
They got taken to Golden Corral? Pfffffffft.
If you haven't made your way over to Mark's Daily Apple. You should do so. A great site on fitness and diet that focuses on a more primal diet and active lifestyle that doesn't tether you to the gym.

Sand flies and sunburns
And by update soon I mean: twelve days later.
I got side tracked by a beach vacation to North Carolina. And quickly relearned that even though I slathered on sunblock, I got a horrible burn on my back and legs. Think Coppertone baby.
Keeping up with fitness I, of course, could not pass up the opportunity to run on the beach in the morning! How fun! I eagerly rolled out of bed at 5:30am and gingerly put on running capris and sports bra and discovered that constrictive clothing, running, and sunburns do not go together. Obviously. I sucked it up because mainly I need the run, wanted to run on the beach, and wanted to see the sunrise.
Running on sand is different than running on a track, road, trail etc. Even if you run on the packed sand where the surf comes in, there's still give to the ground. The harder you pound your feet, the more you sink, the more you push to go forward, and the more you hurt later on the day. I didn't run more than a mile daily and wasn't looking to break any records. It's vacation! Needless to say, if you have the opportunity to run on the beach, do it.
I will warn you of the sand flies (fleas) though. I knew they bite, but the last time I was bit by one was on a horrid hiking trip from my childhood. Those suckers hurt and left little red welts on my legs. They're not bad in the morning, but the evenings were worse.
On another note: jump rope. Is my new favorite tool.

Poundage
Ten more pounds to go.
But of course, if you could lose ten, why not another five?
::shrugs::
A proper update soon! I promise.

Just another pretty girl?
Last night I found myself alone at a bar sipping on tonic water, no less.
I struck up a conversation with a young man who came up to the bar. Somehow the conversation got rolling towards military talk. He had just gotten out of Marine bootcamp! I told him that I'll be leaving close to the end of this year. *crosses fingers* He replied,
"Yeah that's cool. Just don't be afraid to sweat and get dirty. 'Cause you're going to be doing a lot of that."
I'm sorry, did my pearl earrings throw him off?
In other news my foot is fine. Must've been a pull muscle?
In other other news, I lost two more pounds this past week.

Fucking running for fun
I hate running. You know this.
Today at the wonders of 6am I strapped the iPod onto my arm and headed out into the already humid morning.
My route starts out flat for a few yards, past a few neighbors, and then dips dramatically past raw fields. I cross over a plain of grass and wildflowers and into another development.
Half a mile.
Daft Punk's “Robot Rock/Oh Yeah” is blaring, but not overly so. At my old/young age I want to protect my hearing.
The fat on my ass starts to jiggle like crazy and I kind of want to giggle.
A few cars drive by, either going to work or coming home.
Song changes to Peaches's “Billionare”.
Sweat is pouring. I think I should've put the shame aside and wore the discounted Nike runner's top. I got it for $20. Originally $50. Ridiculous.
More sweat. I should've brought a towel. Shoulda, coulda, woulda.
Dog barks.
The development ends and it's open road.
One mile.
I'm a forefront runner. Heel strikers lose.
The fat jiggling on my ass starts to hurt. I feel bad for not loosing it in the time I want.
The sun rises and the heat starts to swell.
I think my area has a heart warning for today, no? Oh fuck.
More sweat, my eyes sting.
I want to check my watch for my time, but I don't. Fucking running for fun.
Car speeds by, clearly not going 45. Glad I'm on the opposite side.
Oh fuck.
What's that?
MEEEEEH!!!!
Why does my foot hurt?
Fuck it, keep going.
Can't.
Slow down.
It's the arch on my right foot.
Now the pain is on the outside behind the lateral malleolus.
Fuck. Fuck. Cunt. Fuck.
Stop.
Car whizzes by and honks. "Hey Red!"
Fuck you. And fuck this. WHAT IS THIS?!
Wait.
Wait.
Walk.
Can't.
Limp home.
Time: 12:45.
Balls.
Not even a mile and a half.
FUCK.
I'll knock off a few seconds because I checked my watch some time after I stopped running. Still no good.
Goddamnit.
Kayne West's "Stronger".
Shush.
Walk.
Limp onto street. Almost home.
In the distance an older man, looks to be in his 60s, jogs towards me.
I feel shame.
It's hot and I didn't put sunscreen on.
His chest is out and his head held up high.
He sees my limp. Points. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I don't live far. It's my foot."
Two miles.
He continues.
Step down.
Ow.
Hobble over the hill.
More sweat.
Foot draaaags.
More cars drive by, but no comments.
Smell of tar reeks badly.
It's hot.
Reach the road home.
2.3 miles.
Right knee starts to ache.
Ah geesh.
Down a hill.
I see home.
Pick up speed.
Pain.
Before I know it, I'm home and the pain trails off. It's not so bad, but it's there. It puts a damper on the workout schedule but after a couple of months of going hardcore I think it's time for a little break.
It's not like I can run on this foot anways. As much as I hate running, if I can't physically run, I get a little blue.
By the by: I swear. A lot. Get used to it or stop reading the blog.

Quarter Life Crisis
Am I doing the right thing?
I'm constantly asking myself this. I don't think I'll ever know the answer to that question though. I think the idea hit home when I finished my autumn semester schedule and realized that my ship date could fall smack in the middle. My professors are accommodating, they will work with me if the occasion arises if I have to skip out early and that's a pretty sweet deal. Am I doing the "right" thing? There's no one definition to "right". That's what the 20s are for, correct? All I can guess is I'll keep trying on different hats until I find one that suits! Preferably a big fancy hat.
BTW: Fuck this weather. 105 degrees?! I know I shouldn't complain but, I even passed a trip to Bodymore, Murderland today. I'll be damned if I'm wearing next to nothing, standing still, and sweating buckets. I'm no sissy, make no mistake. But why be miserable when you have the option to...not be miserable?
I hope to do a fun update and post a play list for workouts later this evening. Because that's how I roll on Saturday evenings now.

Questions #1
Long time no update. Blame it on the education. Now that I’m somewhat free save for the few odd classes and housesitting in bumfucknowhere, I now have more time to do fun things: sleeping, running, working out, reading, cooking, sleeping, etc
But more importantly I can blog and answer some of your questions. I got quite a few from emails and I’m surprised that my little blog has some readers. Go me!
In every email I was asked what kind of training program I’m on; I’m going to presume no one is asking about my “student training program”. That program consists of Red Bulls (sugar free), Bawls, and Monster Recovery.
I change my workout every month so I don’t get bored, and I do ever get bored. So right now my routine looks like this:
Monday: 30 minute intense cardio/hamstring/glutes
Tuesday: Yoga/1 mile run/biceps/triceps
Wednesday: Back/chest/30 mod minute cardio
Thursday: Yoga/2 mile run/core/shoulders
Friday: Quads/Calves/30 minute light cardio
Saturday: 3 mile run/Yoga
Sunday: Rest
That’s this month. Independence Day celebrations have mucked the routine up a bit, and my knees are a little achey, but I’m getting it back. And with the heat wave the East Coast is having running anytime outdoors between 7am and 7pm is next to impossible for my wimp ass self. So yeah I’m that disgusting person who gets up at 5am for a run.
Next month I’ll switch it up a bit and take out some exercises and put new ones in. Bicep curls are awesome but they get boring. I’ll switch them out with hammer curls or Zottman curls or use the barbell instead of dumb bells. And that’s another thing, grip! Grip on the dumb bells/cable/barbell can change how you work the muscles. There’s neutral (palms facing each other), overhand (palms facing forward), underhand (palms face you); and each grip can be used whether you are working arms, shoulders, back, and even lower body exercises. By changing the grip you are changing how the muscle works.
Another question I got a couple times: Do you have a trainer?
Hahah no. I’m too poor. I wish though. But I’ve managed so far by myself and I don’t see the need for one yet. But if you have the money I definitely recommend a personal trainer. If you are new to working out or need external motivation they are an outstanding resource, even if you are a vet to the gym. Check to make sure they are certified: ASE, NASM, ISSA, AFPA; to name a few.
What do you eat?
I’m a little ashamed this hasn’t gone perfectly well and honestly I know a lot about nutrition but I don’t follow a lot of the advice myself, namely because I’m poor. I do drink A LOT of water, almost a gallon daily, and little more on heavy training days. I try to get a fair share of vegetables and whey protein in, particularly after a workout.
How’s the weight loss?
Ooooooo.......
Okay I have a semi good excuse: school. I’m surprised no one asked me about my stress levels or my sleeping habits. I write that because the top have been scientifically proven to effect weight loss. May and June I hardly slept and my stress levels went through the roof. So it didn’t really matter if I ate well and worked out, I wasn’t going to lose much fat or gain enough muscle. And that’s that. You don’t sleep well and relax then you are not doing your body any favors. Unless you’re in bootcamp, and I can’t personally speak about it until I get there. So July promises that I will get eight hours of sleep every night. Well most nights.
At least I didn’t gain any fat.
The Chicago Marine Officer has good documents on physical fitness; whether you are enlisting or going the commission route. Holly asked about the “Female Upper Body Strength Development”. It’s good...but stale. I would definitely break it into two four week programs and make sure to add exercises for every part of the body during the course of a week. This is my opinion, which is not based on any medical training but on my own experience. I highly recommend taking a look at the CMO’s downloads page. Good stuff.
To continue on with upper body strength make sure you are working out more than just your biceps. Triceps, shoulders, back, chest, and even core work are all needed to perform things like...chin ups, flex arm hangs, push ups, ammo can lifts... So technically you could do biceps and triceps on one day, shoulders the second, back and chest the third and rest on the fourth.
To recap and add: drink at least three liters of water daily, eat your veggies, get your sleep, keep the variety in your workouts, and always push yourself, but never to pain.
Again: I'm not a medical and/or sports expert. This is all base on my personal experience.
I would like to recommend to all of you two books I'm very fond of right now:
Jackie Warner's This is Why You're Fat
Warner has a very realistic approach to a healthy lifestyle. It's feasible and easily integrated into anyone's life. She makes a point that her eating and work out plan is not a diet but a lifestyle. By shunning the evils of sugar, incorporating more sleep and water into your life, eating vegetables and healthy foods; you will change your life and mindset for good. And she's right. I love her attitude, I love her plan, and I just downright love the woman. :: bows down :: Definitely four out of four stars.
Women's Health The Big Book of Exercises
Women's Health The Big Book of Exercises is just that. It's a big book of exercises. Filled with photographs of photoshopped women performing exercises for all parts of the body including warm up exercises; and workout plans for all sorts of...events. "Bikini Body Ready Workout". "Bridal Workout". "Mother-to-be Workout". "Look Good in a Pair of Jeans Workout"...corny but, hey it all works. Four out of four.
Good stuff.

Update
Still swamped with school. Why do I wait until the last minute to do work? I'm no model student, but at least I get As.
I have recieved a few emails and blog comments on workout routines, health, etc etc. I have read them and have done some research. I just don't have the time to write out anything substantial until July 1st. Which is next week.
I did add some new links. Mainly informational but I highly recommend you check out Terminal Lance.
So hold tight motivators, your questions will be answered!

Delay...
I'm swamped with summer classes and I apologize for not updating regularly with awesome bits of fitness and my personal going ons. Hopefully once mid terms are down I can ease back.
But for now....bicycle crunches.
Hate'em. Find them kinda pointless. But that's just me. I'll stick to the oblique twists.

Beached whale
I feel like one. After experiencing Ohio's nice dry warm weather, coming back home to an area where it's humid is not so welcoming. Reminds me of the summers spent in The Big Bad Apple. I always thought, as I slept with bags of ice on my legs, stomach, and head that I would sweat myself to death. That I would die a horrible death on the bathroom floor, trying to stay cool to no avail.
I never did anything about it. Buying a AC unit would make my electrical bill sky rocket and being poor, I figured I would suffer from June to September. I wore tons of dresses and skirts. Very little makeup. Anti frizz hair spray piled on. And a gallon jug of water in hand.
Only to curse the blistering cold winter winds that would blow up 2nd Avenue, the down pours while waiting for a cab, and the odd smells coming from New Jersey. Anyone remember when all of NYC smelled like maple syrup?! I broke down and had pancakes for breakfast that day.
Speaking of pancakes I really wanted some today. And I would if it wasn't for the sudden spike in weight gain. The logical side of my mind is that, well I didn't work out consistently for a few days. Ate kinda crappy. Who can turn down wiener schnitzel and German potato salad?! And Dopplebock? Surprise suprise. I don't want to get down on myself but it's frustrating. I can do all these wonderful things with my body and it just doesn't...show. Meh.
I still have a bike ride planned for the evening. I think I have core listed for tonight. And nothing makes me happier than doing 300 crunches! True story. Gross right? That I enjoy doing 300 crunches?

See that? A 28 year old corporal! :-) I can do this. I can do this.
And thank you to all our past, present, and future service members.
PS. If you are ever in Columbus, OH I highly recommend you go to Schmidt's Sausage Haus.

Roller Derby and the Military
I apologise for the lack of updates. I was very motivated a couple of weeks ago and signed up for accelerated summer courses and I got lost in the woodwork. And now here I am procrastinating as the last bits of motivation seeps out.
Updates: I'm still 20lbs out from where I want to be. Sad face all around.
Flexed Arm Hang: 57 seconds.
Crunches 122 in 2 minutes
Run: N/A
I saw a chiropractor for my knee. Lo and behold I have nothing seriously wrong with it and I just need to...em..."rest". Running is being nixed out for the next three weeks. So it's biking, swimming (maybe), and elliptical training for me. A big part of my rehab training involves the power of KT Tape. Which I love, love, love.
Anyways:
National Guardsmen get their kicks with Roller Derby
Soldiers in Roller Derby
Alter Ego Army Spouse Skates for Roller Derby Team
Roller Derby Lieutenant headed to Iraq
Yeah none of them are about Marines playing Roller Derby. I know of current reserve, active duty, and "former" Marines who play derby but they are not in any articles and I don't want to blow their privacy.

The age old this vs that
The perfect setting for such a debate: my sister's college graduation.
My father put it simply: Join the Air Force, the Navy, the Army, or even Coast Guard. But not the Marines. "If you want to do something smart with your life don't join the Marines."
Smart? Are the Marines really that bad? I don't think, I never served but I'm sure it's not a career killer. Besides everyone has their own personal experiences. Some Marines switch to Army and vice versa. Some Marines and Soldiers hated their branch. Some LOVE it. Some are so-so. Some think the other gets better treatment or better gear or better training....and so on.
At the ceremony there were five Army ROTC graduates. That got me thinking about the Army again. Army is, from my research, more lenient or; aware that their soldiers need to be (somewhat) happy to be great soldiers. Marines are the tough 24/7/365 warriors with little regard to their Marines' personal lives. Army is bigger, means more job choices and promotion opportunities as well as a good Enlisted Commissioning Program. But not as tight knit. Marines are smaller, good job choices but are missing some of what I would like to explore, promotion is notoriously slow, tight knit, and have an ECP as well. As far as reputation and respect? Generally, that goes to the Marines. Not saying the Army doesn't get it but the Marines are little higher on the ladder. Army: no honor grads. Marines: honor grads! Army: Boot camp is 9 weeks. Marines: 13 weeks of summer camp fun.
Army: More choices of duty stations. Marines:...some good places. As exotic Okinawa sounds I'm told it's a dump and should avoid the place, at least until I'm an E-4/E-5. ha!
I won't go into the uniform debate but I will say that Army is slowly redeeming itself with the new MultiCam ACUs.
Needless to stay I'm in a big of a quandary. I just don't know what to do.
And who knows, maybe when I finally get fit "enough" to join either one; Jane Campion will buy one of my scripts and I will land myself a pretty comfy directing job. Maybe.
But until then I'll be in the tug-o-war of Army and Marines.

Hello this is BLAH BLAH BLAH
Why is it that recruiters talk so damn fast? No matter what branch they go at lightening speed. It's the same thing now as it was when I was a senior in high school.
I saw an unrecogniZable number on my mobile....cellphone....and let it go to voice mail. Fortunately, the person left a message:
"Hello this Gunnery Sergent BLAH BLAH with the United States Marine Corps BLAH BLAH I saw you were interested in joining awhile back BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH and I'm new in the area and BLAH BLAH give me a call at XXX-XXX-XXXX"
I swear it sounds like "Gunnery Sergent Hygiene"! I wish I was kidding. I looked the number up and it's from a station an hour away from me! What happen to my first recruiter? I wonder if it's just something where they keep your info in the system for awhile and when a new person comes in they cold call those "open ended people". Funny, when I first submitted my info I got a little letter in the post...mail...with the number and address of a station 30 minutes from me. Then I got the call from "my" recruiter in town.
But seriously, I think all the branches need to tell their recruiters to slow the hell down when on the phone. Because the poor man who rang me today is going to forever be known as GySgt Hygiene.

It finally happened...
I was at the gym this afternoon working, focusing on ab work; which is unusual as I don't normally devout a good chunk of time on them. You pretty much work your abs indirectly by numerous other exercises: squats, lunges, shoulder presses/push ups etc. Today I decide to be more adventurous than usual and was going through a gamut of moves that would surely make me regret doing all the work within the next two days. I've done work on the swiss balls, I really like working with them and never had a problem with them before. I was working on on a super set of obliques and was on the swiss ball doing side crunches. I got it done. It was fun. It was easy. So I went from the modified version (the leg closest to the ground bent) to the full side plank pose.
It was like time had stopped and motions were slowed. I felt the ball slip out and did nothing to save myself as I walloped to the ground mid pose with a rather audible sound of displeasure.
There have been numerous disasters at the gym, none of which I had any hand in but:
People falling off ellipticals, either through lost of balance or falling ASLEEP.
Make shift decline benches...there's at least three of them around the gym, no need to build one.
Jump rope mishaps.
Resistance bands mishaps.
Overzealous weight lifting.
Spandex.
Perfume.
No wearing of bras.
Misuse of plyometric boxes.
Teenage boys trying to impress the shorts off of teenage girls (who are just standing around watching them...).
I whacked my ribs good and I'm pretty sure I heard some chuckles.

The knee bone is connected to the...
So my poor knee isn't filled with fluid like I had thought. It swells, yes; but that isn't the main problem. No. The knee cap is subluxed. I've been running on a partially dislocated knee cap? I've been weight lifting with a partially dislocated knee cap? For a month and a half?
Back in March I took a rather nasty spill landing straight down on my knee. No twisting or jerking, just down. It swelled pretty bad and the knee was heavy; and I thought I was done with sports. Done with anything intensive. The pain wasn't too bad but I cried. Not bawling, it was as if my eyes turned on a faucet and the tears just flowed without noise. I was on crutches for a couple of days to help allieviate the swelling. The x-rays showed nothing particular and I was sent home with a bad contusion. I rested for two weeks and went back to working out, light at first and gradually back into more intensive workouts. Presses, benching, squats, lunges, but no jumps. It was still bugging and went back to the orthopedic. She looks at the same x-ray I had back in March and determines that I have a subluxed knee cap and I need a lateral release surgery done to the knee.
She never mentioned physical therapy.
For a surgery that has a success rate that is about 50/50 and is treatable with rehab why would I do this? Especially at my age? I had the same problem with my right knee after years of soccer, baseball, camogie, and Derby. My knee healed with rest and tough rehab sessions. Again, why would I do something extreme that is easily treatable with rehab?
It got me thinking about how military women are different from female athletes. And the reason why I put female instead of an inclusive term is that females are more prone to knee injuries. If I started out with very little muscle mass and so did my male counterpart; and we both want to train for Derby; if I want to have a long career in the sport, I will have to build up a lot more leg muscles to compensate for my flexible joints while my male buddy would not. Now that's the basic, obviously if we want to be top athletes we will have to do an overall strength training regime.
There's a lot of running in the military and running is one of the worst things you could do to your knees, ironically. That is if you don't run correctly So how do you prevent the injuries? You build strength and you listen to your body. Rest when you need to and take care of yourself. I'm aware that there are PT days but is any part of that day geared to strengthen the muscles to prevent injury? Is health maintenance encouraged in the military? As in giving members ample time to workout? Are there seminars on health issues? I'm thinking it would be ...."the suck"....if one injured themselves during a simple three mile run due to lack of knowledge of knee care.
I would know. I spent years not listening to adults, because what teenager really wants to hear responsible advice given by caring parents/coaches/teachers? I'm paying for it now with muscle imbalance and doing stupid things. Or maybe it's just the activity level catching up.....
The one thing I can say is, build up your hips and glutes. We forget that our knees are really at the mercy of our hips and feet. We wear the wrong shoes. We don't workout. We don't care and take ourselves for granted. We have poor posture. We have poor walking/running habits. Get that changed folks.

Happy Birthday to me!
At 18 I knew everything. I didn't want any help and I trekked out to The Big Bad Apple to live and make movies. Stubborn. Hard headed. Fiery. Fresh faced. Full of motivation, big ideas, and tons of goals.
Now at 25 I don't know a damn thing and I need help. I'm living at home with a bad case of writer's block. Still stubborn, hard headed, and fiery. But now I have that worn Irish weary eyed look on life. Think Dylan Moran. (video)
I need to make a list before I hit 30. *gulp*

Pride and Joy?
I passed the IST*...well...on my own; not with any of the Army/Marine recruiters. Because:
1.) Army recruiter STILL hasn't gotten back to me.
2.) The Marine recruiter still won't process me until I'm 20lbs lighter.
:-\
But I PASSED the IST. I PASSED. Being 20lbs overweight and with a knee that contains more fluid than what it should, I MOTHERFUCKING PASSED.
Barely on the running portion but that can be improved upon.
Hahahah I WANT MY WAIVER NOW!!
My mother is happy for me and that makes me happy.
My father?
My father is an Army man, so he is biased. But him along with so many other people who find out I'm leaning towards the Marines, I get the same response; "Why don't you join the Air Force?"
If I want to join the Air Force, I will join the Air Force. But I have no desire to, so therefore I won't. It's simple. "But there are sooo many opportunities in the Air Force!" I understand that. But I went to school for filmmaking and if I join the service I would like to carry that over to some aspect of my military career. I want something challenging. I want to be part of something more than a film set filled with big egos, make up trailers, and SAG regulations. "What about the Peace Corps! Join the Peace Corps!" No. That and I don't have much of a rapport for the Peace Corps. "Can you honestly kill someone?" Not to be unPC, but that's a retarded question. There are plenty of people in the military who have never killed a person. But most of all, it's the comments from my father that strike me particularly hard, probably because he's Da. "They (sic Marines) don't take care of their people." "As a woman you would not have any opportunities to grow."
Even if I didn't pick 4671, there's a good amount of MOSs I could take out into the "real world" after the Marines. And even from the Army. Despite the whole Marines vs Army deal, I'm sure if I sign my name to Eagle, Globe, and Anchor branch there will be yelling, crying (from me), slamming of doors, and empty threats between my father and I. I'm turning 25 this week. Really, I think I can make my own choices without being labeled that "I'm doing it for the uniform" or "You haven't done your research" bullshit.
My film career is stagnant. I've had a bad case of writer's block and no time to get over it. I hateschool my professors. I want something new, exciting, and something I'll be doing for a few years. I've done my stint as a derby athlete. It's time to hang up those skates and move on. I ache for a change.
I just hope he will still be proud of me no matter what I do. No matter what uniform I put on.
Speaking of family...living with your folks after...six years on your own; talk about change.

What's in a name?
I've been thinking about the name of this blog. It's corny. Right now it'll suffice. I actually have a really good idea for a name but it's pointless to title the blog that until I pass bootcamp. But it's really catchy! And fun! And exciting! But as I said it's not entirely correct as of now....or maybe I should just do it....hmmm
I dropped 2.5 pounds last week only to gain a pound this week. ??
I don't understand that unless if it was muscle gain. But there's no way anyone can gain a pound of muscle in a week? As I said a couple of posts back I've switched to an entirely strength based programme. But my diet is not stellar for me to gain a pound of muscle. So I'm frustrated. Very frustrated.
For those wondering how I'm doing on the push up challenge...as of today I'm at 7600 push ups. I'm beat. I have until May 2nd to finish 10,000.
I can do it.

If I had magic pills....
I complained so much about not losing weight I lost two pounds this week. In theory if I keep bitching about it I'll keep losing.
Because the lost was in no way connected to upping my strength program....
Another new drug is being brought up to the FDA for approval. I had to do some research because I have never heard of a site called "Weight Loss Surgery Channel" and found a supporting article at Reuters. From the reports there were no long term studies done on the drug. Were the particpants able to keep the weight off? More importantly, the sideffects? If people switched to a healthier diet I'm sure that for the most part people would not need pills to lose the excess weight.
Wauwatosa, WI has the right idea.
And Baylor Health Care Systems.
Random note: Living in NYC there were rumours about starting the 2nd Ave subway line..which..really? Granted that far north on the island to get from Lexington Ave line to say...York Ave is a bit of a hike, Eight blocks maybe? Now with the line under construction more businesses are shutting down, including a gym I use to go to with a friend.

Weightloss
Sometimes I get so hung up about these last pounds it's ridiculous. It's one thing I can actually control (for the most part) and something just isn't working. I'm pretty sure the last 20lbs are all in my ass, which has proven to be a difficult area to lose inches.
Losing the weight isn't for vanity reasons obviously or this blog wouldn't be here. I'm required to lose the weight or I can't join the Army/Marines. In theory I could lose it all in basic training/boot camp, but what if I don't?
The best solution is to just forget about the weightloss and just focus on run time, situps, pushups, and arm hangs.

Recruiter Issues....
Back in March I had to move a meeting with the Army recruiter back a few days due to a new baby in the family. When I got back in town a little earlier (the day we were to meet) I rang him up and was told that he was not in and went home early. I figured that's okay because he cam in at 3am and was beat. And that's find because at that time I didn't lose the two pounds I wanted and I was about to pass out from lack of sleep.
So I rang him that following Monday. Not there. Rang him that following Friday. Nothing.
Next week....nothing.
And now...three weeks out....still nothing. I'm going to phone him today but I have to wonder how awkward that conversation will be, if it takes place. He probably thinks I punked out on him. Is joining the service like converting to Judasim? Where the recruiter will turn you down three times and if you come back for a fourth try they'll take you in?

Fitness round up: Getting buff and staying away from 3,000 calorie meals
10,000 Push ups in a month: Today 2430 push ups so far.
3 Mile Run: 30:02 (oooooh fuuuuuuuuu)
2 Mile Run: 21:13
1 1/2 Mile Run: 17:22
Yes I'm beat. And no I haven't attempted any pull ups/flexed arm hangs. I. Am. Sore. Those run times are bleeeeeeeeeeeeeh.
If you've always wanted to look like you're cut from head to toe (I wouldn't mind....) then check out "I want to look like that guy!" Particularly the page with the videos.
WedMD.....a site I should never visit; "Why does my knee make a clicking noise? Why am I feeling pain on my side? Why am I bleeding from my ears?" Any dang way they had an article out that I thought was interesting and relevant.
I'm pretty fortunate I don't have any cravings for fast food or junk food in general. Unless I'm PMSing...which I am right now...then it's just the occasional chocolate andbottle glass of red wine. I can't fathom how some people eat crap 24/7/365. The last time I ate fast food (7 months ago) I felt like dying. That and as if I had rub the sandwich all over my face. I get sugar highs from fruit. Watermelon, which is almost pure glucose, puts me into a crack induced frenzy state. Speaking of crap food.....
Men's Health came out with a new 20 Worst Restaurant Foods.
I personally want to know what The Cheesecake Factory is DOING TO THEIR FOOD!! That's not normal. That's not right.
If looking at those links made you feel horrible let me direct you to my favourite exercise database sites here and here.
This week I started my all strength training routine and as I stated above, I'm sore. I am mainly focusing on upper body and core strength while my lower body is geared towards rehabbing my knees with medium intensity workouts. Squats, lunges, leg presses etc. without heavy weights. Obviously it's too early to see if this strength only regime will work or have any positive effect. I'm not kicking out cardio entirely but for this week I need to put it on the back burner so my knees can heal. And I need to build up muscles badly. I'm not weak, but to lift my ass up to a pull bar I need arms of steel.
I'm not looking to be like Pauline Nordin. All I want is my run time to be outstanding and to do pull ups.
And bounce quarters off my ass.

So what if you're gay and sexually assaulted?
This bugs me a bit. I'm not surprised but really? People still think homosexuals are nothing but a bunch of wild, undisciplined, crazy, sex fiends who would rape you the second the lights turn off? It's issues like this one that saddens me and puts a damper on joining the service. Who cares who you like to fuck as long as you are the best Marine/Soldier/Airman/Sailor? It's not disease or illness. And it certainly doesn't inhibit someone from doing their job.
So is sexual assault. I can't tell you how much that angers and saddens me. You volunteer to serve your country and not only do you have to be trained to fight the enemy on the other side but the "enemy within". There will always be that "boys will be boys" excuse and that's fucking bull shit. Or "she deserved it/she had it coming". Who deserves to be raped?!?! People who go out and have a few drinks...do they deserve to be raped? People who go out by themselves on base...do they deserve to be raped? I think Jamie Doak nailed it in her article and tips to prevent sexual assault.
A friend emailed me this link, a little film titled "Rape in The Ranks". I haven't seen the film so I can't pass judgment on it. The related video clips on You Tube are concerning. This is what makes me nervous, that no matter how straight lace I may be, no matter hard working I am, there's this chance I might be sexually assaulted (assaulted in general really) by a fellow Soldier/Marine....
It's just not right.

Boot camp/Basic training
Boot camp = Marines
Basic training = Army
I do not want to get that mixed up. While I'm at it:
DIs (Drill Instructors) = Marines
DSs (Drill Sergeants) = Army
The past few months...oh more than that... I've been looking at the training involved for both branches. Both are going to be tough no matter what, physically and mentally. Army is 9 weeks and Marines is 13 weeks. So the Marine Corps has this bragging right that they're tougher with higher PFT scores and longer recruit training. Boil it down, you have to be in shape. You have to run. Do push ups. Do crunches...sit ups. About two years ago the Marine Corps started the CFT or Combat Fitness Test to go with the PFT.
Digressing: Notice on the PFT link that for female Marines one pull up out scores the flexed arm hang. Hm. If that's the case then...shit looks like I'll be working on pull ups.
Anyways...the CFT! Involves running, carrying 30lb ammo cans and your fellow Marines. This I actually makes my knees shake in fear.
The Army's PFT is "second hardest PFT next to the Corps". With a 2 mile run, push ups, and sit ups. I can't conquer the run time yet. And I don't expect to until the end of the month. Sit ups I past, barely...FULL sit ups. Push ups I'm eh. Needless to see I need improvements all around. If I'm going to join I might as well Ace everything!
I thought I was in shape before but when I first started heavy training and I could barely put out 5 push ups it really makes one put their own fitness level in perspective. I can do 20 now. Shitty. But I can do it. Aiming for 40 good ones.
If I join the Army I'm most likely going to Fort Jackson, South Carolina. If I join the Marines it's South Carolina...so either way I'm going to a a swampy humid state in the summer time/early Autumn. Perfect.
Now what gets me is that in the Army basic training is that women and men are put together while in the Marines, women are trained separately. I'm all for equality but biologically speaking women, rarely, can meet and exceed physical strength of their fellow soldier/Marine. I was told the Army combined the genders as a way to promote equality. Eh. Personally I like the Marine Corps's way of keeping male and female recruits separate.

Yoga, Weight loss, and training schedule
I've been doing yoga for about a year consistently. I'm not the best at it and I can't hold Dancer Pose very long, oh a couple of seconds at best. But I enjoy it and it helps with joint pain and stabilisation. Having the knee injury I'm limited to the high levels of intensity of lifting. Which puts me behind schedule on muscle growth and where I want to be but such is life of contact sports. It's been close to a month since slamming my knee with all my weight plus the weight of another athlete on top of me and my knee is showing small improvements as the weeks fly by. Today I noticed during the Garland Pose my left knee no longer gave out in low squats! Triumph!
Yoga and strength training go hand in hand for me. Yoga provides the isometric strength that enhances and stablises my muscles and joints. As well as others I presume. I don't think they do yoga in boot camp/basic training. Shame. That would be amusing to see a bunch of recruits attempting the Half Moon/Sea Star pose. ha!

Weightloss
This bit came from my Google alert. 10lbs in 10 days? Yeah that'll go right back on and then some. Even people with money can't educate themselves of healthy living.
Now I wouldn't mind losing 40lbs but...I don't have 40lbs of extra fat on me and if I did I'm sure that when I lose all 40lbs of fat I'll end up in the hospital. But this question and response That's Fit provides a good answer to the cardio/weight training for weight loss. I don't mind doing cardio, I can easily go an hour, but in the long term it's more beneficial for me, joining the Army or Marines, just to strength time 5x a week.
Starting next week....technically today...err..tomorrow...I'll be starting a schedule heavy of strength training and limiting cardio to warm ups and run time tests.

Running
It's a well known fact that running is just about a damn near daily occurance no matter what branch of service you choose. Though some would argue you get out of it in AF but that digresses into a whole bunch of jokes and this service vs. that service.
It's well known that I hate to run. Hate it. A teammate of mine once said, "If God wanted us to run he wouldn't have invented the wheel. Suckers!" True, skating is a lot easier on the joints and a hell of a lot faster to boot. Running is relatively easy...it's just putting one foot in front of the other really fast. That is if you are in fantastic shape with no injuries. I'm not in such fantastic shape and I'm currently popping Motrin and icing my knees at this moment preparing for cardio. Yet, I'm envious of people who can do six minute miles and three miles in twenty minutes. At this point my focus is getting the bare minimum in running and hoping my sit ups and push ups/flexed arm hang can get me through. And honestly...I'm at least 20 pounds of flabby fat over weight. That's drag weight. While 20lbs might not seem like a lot, it is on the knees. Extra 20lbs hitting the knees and ankles. It's tough.
So running for me started quite simply. I drudgingly put one foot in front of the other. Jogging. I can't sprint to save my live yet. If I were to ever get attacked, hopefully I'll be in a pair of roller skates and not Sauconys.

The Beginning
I don't know why and I don't know why I decided that NOW would be a good time to join the Army/Marines. I'll be 25 at the end of the month. There's a war going on. And my knees are shot to hell thanks to aggressive contact sports. And sports that aren't contact but I made into a contact sport. Sorry kickball.
So here follows a blog where I'll put my fingers to the keyboard about me getting into shape, learning about the Marine Corps/Army, my decision making process of which two branches to join, links to health articles and sites, and anything related to women in the military. Particularly Army or Marines.
Stats Now
Height: 5'2
Weight: 190
Body fat: 27%
Goal
Height: 5'9
Weight: 165
Body fat: 17%.....ish
I currently work out five to six times a week. My workouts include yoga, Pilates, cardio, and strength training.
I also have a bummed knee from a sports playing. Not kickball. Contusion. Nothing serious, hopefully. I can't afford an MRI as I'm still paying off the last one I got and the one before that....
I'm following a low GI (glycemic index) diet. Seems to be working well and I feel great. Veggies, lean proteins, and the inconvenience of lugging around a gallon jug of water.
And finally since I'm an idiot I decided to partake in the 10,000 Push Ups in a Month challenge. I finished up Day 2 and I have 570 push ups behind me. I'm hoping that by May 2nd my upper body will be in proportion of my lower body.
It's a Saturday night/Sunday morning, I presume I should make a good impression and get some sleep.
This goes without saying/writing BUT....if you don't have a sense of humour or don't enjoy the wonders of sarcasm...best you stop reading now.
